NOTES
1. Recent advertisement for hardened site in Kansas. "Topeka, KS. Former underground switching station for Looking-Glass airborne command center. [U.S. Strategic Command]. 12,500 square feet of underground floor space. 12" to 18" of earth over the top. 12" thick walls. 13' ceiling height. On 4 acres with high chain-link fence. Easy access from major highway. Paved parking lot, kitchen, bedroom, 2 bathrooms, shower; lots of space, clean, well-lit, with air conditioning. Ready for immediate use. Floor plan available. Price: $197,000"
2. This column also contains systems that predate AUTOVON and successor
systems. AUTOVON has been replaced by the Defense Switched Information
System (DISN). DISN is subdivided into the Defense Red Switch Network
(DRSN) for Classified Voice traffic and the Defense Switched Network (DSN)
for Unclassified voice traffic. DISN also has the Defense Data Network
(DDN) witch is deviled into MILNET (Unclassified) and DSNET1, DSNET2, DSNET3
for (Secret, Top Secret and Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information).
DDN was scheduled to be turned down in late 1965 but several sources indicate
it is still active due to problems with a follow on system. DISN also has
2 Internet Protocol (IP) Router Networks; N-level (Unclassified-but-sensitive)
Router Network (NIPRNET) and Secret IP Router Network (SIPRNET). DISN also
support many Imaging and Transmission systems globally. For a detailed
list see: DISN Point/Baseline
System .
For the original AUTOVON system see this AUTOVON
article.
3. Barksdale AFB was home for one of the 3 PACCS sites in the late 1960's. These sites required a lot of AT&T support and usually a hardened AUTOVON switch nearby. My records show no such facility near Barksdale. Any information on Barksdale would be greatly appreciated.
4. Hardened refers to sites that meet AT&T's Design Criteria for 10 PSI or greater. These structures are generally below grade with a minimum of 2 foot thick concrete walls and designed to withstand a 20 megaton blast 5 miles away. In this "semi" refershart refers to 2 PSI structures that were designed to survive a 20 megaton blast 13 miles away.
5. A diagram of the White Alice Communications System is a Bill Everly's White Alice Web Site.
6. Mojave, CA-Greenbelt, MD "Hardened" "A" cable (MOJ-GRB) - Commissioned in 1964 as an "improved" L-3, and provided with underground stations and repeater huts designed to survive nuclear attack short of a direct hit. 12 tube coax, with wider diameter tubes. In California, Mojave 2 was the western terminus of the "backbone" line that headed eastward, eventually terminating at Greenbelt, MD. At Mojave, other L-3 routes fanned out to various places: Los Angeles 3, San Bernadino 1, Sherman Oaks 1 and San Luis Obispo Jct. 2, which was the eastern terminus of the Trans Pacific Cable, TCP-2. Of the 4 "star" routes out of Mojave, only the San Luis Obispo Jct route was completely hardened. The other two routes were hardened up until they entered their respective terminal buildings. MOJ-GRB was converted to a Philips (P-140) coaxial system starting in 1987, P-140 had a bit rate of 140MB/s. (Courtesy B. Scarboro)
7. GEP refers to Ground Entry Point system (AKA Northstar Ground Entry Point Network) , a wide band FM system. The original system usedg Collins Radio equipment with a 12 channel multiplex system. The airborne side of the system is a ARC-201 radio reported to be upgraded to a AN/ARC-171-1H transciever. The ground equipment has been reported to be a modification of the airborne system.
Raytheon under contract with DIAS is investigating upgrading the GEP's to a T-1 (1.544 Mbps) link "Northstar GEP Technology Insertion" (NGIT). This system would add five more GEP sites in the Northwest (Spokane, Rapid City, Bozeman, Sacramento and Mitchell).
The Echo Fox system is no longer in existence, it was a single channel
system operating in the federal 400 MHz spectrum,
See
Echo Fox Radio System description. The locations of GEP and E/F stations
changed several times during the Cold War, and GEP locations still are
changing as the mission for them changes. Since many of the systems
listed in this site no longer exist the locations are historical in nature
and in general refer to sites that now have or at one time in the past
had the system listed.
8."L Carrier" refers to sites which had L Carrier Coaxial Cable equipment. Some microwave and troposcatter sites had L Carrier radio equipment which is not addressed in this chart. If sites had microwave equipment it is also noted by the system type.
9. SCOTS, (Surveillance and Control of Telecommunications Routes) remote monitoring and control or microwave routes.
10. JFS, RFS and DDS refer to the Bell System Synchronization system.
