An LCXR main station, definitely hardened. In conversation with
one of the switch techs, I learned that all of the decontamination &
anti-fallout systems (airlocks, exterior washdown, etc.) had all been removed
about 12-18 months ago to make room for office space and because they're
no longer needed. AT&T long distance still switches at the site.
They're in the basement though, and I didn't get a chance to poke around
down there. This site still has its MW tower and has active MW gear
on it (at least, the equipment in the room labeled "Microwave Room" is
all still powered up and looks live). The only horn on the tower
that appears to be in use points NNW, more or less. Right across
the street (FL Rt. 33) is an ex-GTE (I think, the signs were mostly gone)
CO with a MW tower as well. That site (according to the local ATT
people) has been abandoned as a manned location for about three or four
years at least. Found a repeater hut exactly two miles south of the
site on Rt. 33 (actually, just off 33 to the right on a cross street as
you head south from the site). Running along FL Rt. 33 right in front
of this site are FO runs belonging to AT&T, GTE/Verizon, Time-Warner,
and LDDS.
